Fulham Carpet Cleaners Health and Safety Policy

Fulham Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing carpet, upholstery and related cleaning services in a way that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks at all stages of our work, from initial assessment to the completion of each cleaning task.

Policy Statement and Objectives

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our cleaning activities. We will identify hazards, assess risks and put proportionate control measures in place. We aim to maintain a culture in which health and safety considerations are integral to planning, supervision and delivery of all services.

Management is responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented, reviewed regularly and communicated to all team members. Every employee is expected to co-operate fully with this policy and to take reasonable care of themselves and others who may be affected by their work.

Legal Duties and Responsibilities

Fulham Carpet Cleaners will comply with relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards relating to cleaning operations. We will follow safe working practices appropriate to domestic and commercial premises, shared access areas and other client locations in our service area.

Management will provide information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to ensure that employees are competent to carry out their work safely. Employees must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, and immediately report hazards, near-misses and incidents so that corrective action can be taken.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before starting work at any site, a suitable and proportionate risk assessment will be carried out, either formally or dynamically on arrival. This assessment will consider slip and trip hazards, electrical safety, manual handling, chemical risks, access issues, and the presence of clients, children, pets or members of the public.

Where risks are identified, we will implement safe systems of work, such as planning cable routes to prevent trips, isolating work areas where possible, using signage where appropriate, and choosing cleaning methods that minimise risk while still providing an effective result. Staff are required to follow these systems and not to take shortcuts that compromise safety.

Chemical Safety and COSHH

Cleaning solutions, stain removers and other substances used by Fulham Carpet Cleaners will be managed in line with recognised chemical safety requirements. Only approved products will be used, and they must be stored, transported, diluted and applied according to manufacturer instructions and relevant safety data.

Employees will be trained on safe handling of chemicals, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves or eye protection where necessary. Chemicals will not be left unattended in areas accessible to children, pets or vulnerable persons, and containers must always be clearly labelled.

Equipment, Machinery and Electrical Safety

All machinery and equipment, including carpet cleaning machines, vacuum cleaners and accessories, will be maintained in good working order and inspected at appropriate intervals. Defective equipment must not be used and must be reported to management for repair or replacement.

Employees will use only suitable electrical sockets and must check cables and plugs before use. Extension leads and hoses will be positioned to minimise trip hazards. Water and electricity must be kept separate at all times, and any signs of electrical faults, burning smells or excessive heat must result in immediate cessation of use and removal of the equipment from service.

Manual Handling and Physical Safety

Many cleaning activities involve lifting, carrying and moving equipment or furniture. Fulham Carpet Cleaners will provide guidance on correct manual handling techniques and encourage the use of handling aids where reasonably practicable.

Employees must avoid lifting loads that are too heavy for them, must seek assistance where needed, and must not move items that could cause structural or property damage. Where furniture or other items need to be moved to facilitate cleaning, this will be done with care to avoid injury and prevent damage to the client's belongings or fixtures.

Working in Client Premises

Respect for client premises and the people within them is central to our health and safety approach. Staff must maintain tidy work areas, keep walkways clear wherever possible, and ensure that any temporary hazards are controlled or clearly identified.

Children, pets and other occupants must be kept away from working areas, chemicals and equipment. Doors, stairs and access routes must be managed to prevent accidents, particularly when hoses, cables or wet floors are present. At the end of each job, the work area will be checked to ensure that it is safe and that no equipment or chemical containers have been left behind.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where risks cannot be eliminated by other means, appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided and used. This may include gloves, masks, eye protection, knee pads or other items relevant to the specific task and environment.

Employees must look after PPE, use it correctly and report any loss, damage or defect. PPE is a last line of defence and does not replace the need for good working practices and effective control measures.

Training, Communication and Competence

Fulham Carpet Cleaners will provide initial and ongoing training in safe cleaning methods, use of chemicals, equipment operation, manual handling, emergency procedures and incident reporting. New employees will receive induction training before working independently at client sites.

Health and safety information will be communicated through briefings, updates and toolbox talks where appropriate. Staff are encouraged to raise any concerns or suggestions for improving safety. We recognise that open communication is essential to prevent accidents and maintain high standards.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near-misses must be reported promptly to management, whether they occur to employees, clients or members of the public. We will investigate these events where required and use the findings to improve our procedures and prevent recurrence.

Employees must be familiar with basic emergency actions, including what to do in case of fire, electric shock, chemical splashes or slips and trips. Where an incident occurs in a client's premises, the safety of people is the immediate priority, followed by securing the area and notifying the client as appropriate.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed periodically and when there are significant changes in our activities, equipment, materials or legislative requirements. We will monitor our performance through feedback, incident reports and on-site checks, and we will take action to address any shortcomings identified.

Fulham Carpet Cleaners is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety. By working together and maintaining high standards, we will provide professional cleaning services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone affected by our operations.
